Russell was a stalwart practitioner across social and environmental development for nearly 50 years in 60+ countries across the world. Russell was an ardent supporter of Social Enterprise development and has backed early-stage Social enterprises financially and intellectually starting from the 80s. He is the founder of S3IDF where he designed the Social Merchant Bank Approach (SMBA), implemented and transferred in various countries.
Russell was also an author of various research initiatives, his pioneering work includes "The Energy dimensions of Poverty" for a world study on poverty commissioned by International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD).
Russell held a Ph.D in Engineering Economics from Harvard University and a masters degree in Engineering from Harvard University.
